A Lifetime in Martial Arts

Reflections on a Lifetime in Martial Arts (And Why the Next Generation Matters Most).

In the martial arts world, it is very easy to get caught up in the hardware. We count stripes on belts, we count medals, and we count the years we’ve been on the mats.

I was incredibly humbled to receive the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame (A.M.A.H.O.F.). This followed being inducted as the Budoka of the Year for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2016.

When you are handed awards with words like "Lifetime" attached to them, it forces you to stop and look back at the journey. And the truth is, these awards aren't really about me. They are a reflection of the incredible instructors who guided me, the training partners who pushed me, and most importantly, the students I have the privilege of teaching today.

It Started by Pure Coincidence.

If you had told me thirty years ago where martial arts would take me, I wouldn't have believed you.

I’ve always loved martial arts, spending years training in Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, and earning black belts in Ninjitsu and Pankration. But my introduction to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was actually a complete coincidence. The owner of my local gym just happened to invite me down to the basement to train some grappling one day.

The Real Reward of Coaching.

I had my time on the competition mats. I was fortunate enough to win NSW titles, Australian titles, and Pan Pacific Championships over the years. I even had the unique opportunity to travel to Europe to teach seminars to elite law enforcement and military special forces. .

But here is the honest truth about martial arts: your own medals eventually just gather dust on a shelf. .

The real reward—the thing that keeps me stepping onto the mats at Ultimate Jiu Jitsu every single week—is watching my students succeed. When our students became the first Australian gold medalists at the World Pro in Abu Dhabi, and the first Australian kids to win gold at the Kid's World Championships in the US... that is the real achievement. .

Passing the knowledge down, watching a quiet kid build unbreakable confidence, or helping an adult learn how to truly defend themselves—that is the legacy I actually care about. .

Start Your Own Journey.

If you are looking to start your martial arts journey here in Sydney, I would be honoured to share what I've learned over the last 30 years with you. .

At Ultimate Jiu Jitsu, we don't care if you want to be a world champion or if you just want to get fit, learn practical self-defence, and make some great friends. Our mats are open to everyone. .

Come down and see what a lifetime of martial arts passion looks like in practice.
