mindset, Philosophy, the academy
Meet David Chow. Head Instructor – UJJ Hurstville
Some people discover Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because they're looking for a new hobby. Others are searching for fitness, self-defence or competition.
For David Chow, it all started with curiosity.
While training Muay Thai, David couldn't help noticing that more and more people were leaving the striking classes and walking into the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu room next door. He held onto his boxing gloves for a few more years, but eventually curiosity got the better of him.
When a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy opened close to David's workplace, he decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about.
That decision would change the course of his martial arts journey.
Discovering the Gentle Art
Like many beginners, David quickly realised that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was unlike anything he had experienced before.
Despite years of striking experience, he found himself learning an entirely new way to move, think and solve problems.
Technique replaced strength, timing replaced speed, and leverage replaced force.
"It felt like I had to learn how to walk again in the world of martial arts."
Rather than becoming discouraged, David embraced the challenge.
That willingness to become a beginner again laid the foundation for the coach he would later become.
A Student First
David believes that great coaches never stop learning.
Throughout his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey, he has remained committed to continually developing his skills both on and off the mats.
David trained more than a decade refining his technical knowledge while helping others enjoy the same journey, and later earned his Black Belt under Professor Robert Naumoski.
Today, as Head Instructor of UJJ Hurstville, he brings that same patient and thoughtful approach into every class.
Whether you're stepping onto the mats for the very first time or preparing for competition, David believes every student deserves individual attention, clear instruction and a supportive environment in which to grow.
Coaching Philosophy
David understands that every student arrives with different goals.
Some want to improve their fitness, while others are looking for practical self-defence.
Others still might enjoy the technical challenge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or want to compete at a higher level.
His coaching philosophy remains the same:
Build strong fundamentals first.
By focusing on sound technique, patience and consistent improvement, students develop skills that continue to serve them as they progress through every stage of their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey.
Classes are welcoming, structured and designed to challenge students while making learning enjoyable.
Competition Experience
David has successfully competed throughout his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey, earning numerous titles across state and national competitions.
His achievements include:
- Aus Sub Only Champion
- Sydney Cup Champion
- NSW Summer Cup Champion
- Events BJJ Champion
- Multiple Open Weight Titles
- Multiple Masters Division Titles
- NSW State Championship medallist
While competition has played an important role in his own development, David believes success isn't measured only by medals.
The greatest reward comes from seeing students develop confidence, overcome challenges and achieve goals they once thought impossible.
More Than Martial Arts
Away from the mats, David's professional background reflects the same analytical mindset he brings to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
He holds:
- Bachelor of Telecommunications Engineering (Honours) – University of New South Wales
- Master of Business and Technology – Australian Graduate School of Management
